Illustrative estimate only. Pay figures use flat marginal rates by tax band and do not model pensions, student loans, personal-allowance taper or Scottish rates. Holiday figures assume statutory accrual. For your specific contract take advice from HR, Acas or a solicitor before signing anything.

How the planner is built

The planner is not a separate calculation engine. It composes the same helpers used by the standalone tools on this site: the notice period calculation on the homepage, the holiday entitlement maths, the PILON gross calculation under HMRC EIM13880 and the take-home estimate used by the final-pay estimator. If a number here looks off, try the matching dedicated calculator — the figures should agree.

What the planner does not do

  • It does not give legal advice. For contract-specific questions, speak to Acas, a solicitor or your HR team.
  • It does not calculate statutory redundancy pay — use the redundancy calculator for that.
  • It does not apply the £30,000 settlement allowance — see the settlement agreement tax calculator.
  • It does not model Scottish income tax, student loans or pension contributions.
  • It does not save or transmit anything. Everything runs in your browser.

When to use the planner vs the individual calculators

Use the planner when you want one view of the whole exit: resignation date, final working day, final payslip, holiday position and new-job timing. Use the individual calculators when you need to show a specific figure to HR, pull up HMRC-level detail on PENP, or audit a settlement letter.

Frequently asked questions

What does the leaving-a-job planner do?
It takes your resignation date, notice period, salary, holiday balance and exit style (PILON, garden leave or working your notice) and returns a single personalised view: your final working day, estimated final payslip including PILON and holiday payout, a timeline of key dates, and a practical leaving-work checklist. All in one place, no sign-up.
Can I use this planner for redundancy?
Yes, partly. The notice, final working day, holiday payout and PILON components work the same way for redundancy. For statutory redundancy pay and the £30,000 tax-free allowance, use the redundancy pay calculator and the settlement agreement tax calculator alongside this planner.
Does it include tax?
The take-home figures use flat marginal rates by tax band (basic 20%, higher 40%, additional 45%) plus a flat employee NI rate. It does not model the personal allowance taper above £100,000, student loans, pension contributions or Scottish income tax. Treat it as illustrative, not payroll-grade.
What is PILON on this planner?
PILON (Payment in Lieu of Notice) is a lump sum your employer pays instead of making you work your notice. Tick the PILON box in the planner and it will calculate the gross figure from your pay and the unworked notice. Since April 2018 PILON is fully taxable as earnings under HMRC's PENP rules.
What is the difference between PILON and garden leave on the planner?
With PILON you are no longer employed and get a lump sum. With garden leave you stay employed through your notice but are not required to work. The planner calculates pay differently for each: PILON produces a one-off taxable payment; garden leave treats your salary as continuing normally.
Is my data saved anywhere?
No. Everything runs in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, nothing is stored. Closing the tab wipes your inputs.
