How the six-month timeline works
Six months of training is the qualifying step. Most career changes need an additional two to four months for portfolio-building, networking and applications before the first role. The total “course start to first day in new role” is typically 8 to 12 months, which fits inside the runway of a well-planned redundancy or planned resignation.
The list below covers training routes where a six-month investment translates reliably into employability. Routes are ordered by accessibility (lower upfront cost first) not earnings ceiling.
1. HGV driver (Cat C / C+E)
Training: 8 to 14 weeks. Cost: £2,500 to £4,500 (sometimes employer-funded). Starting salary: £30,000 to £40,000 employed. Highly accessible with strong UK demand. Older career changers (50+) often welcome.
2. Healthcare assistant
NHS healthcare assistant roles use employer-funded training. Time from application to working role 3 to 6 months. Starting salary £22,000 to £25,000, with progression to £30,000+ in qualified assistant practitioner roles within 18 to 24 months.
3. AAT Level 2 and 3 (accounting)
AAT Level 2 takes 3 to 6 months part-time (£600 to £1,500). Combined Level 2 and 3 inside 12 months. Entry-level accounting and bookkeeping roles £22,000 to £30,000; progressively higher as the qualification builds.
4. Digital marketing certification
Google Ads, Meta Blueprint, HubSpot, general digital marketing courses. 3 to 6 months part-time to professional level. Entry roles £25,000 to £35,000, progression to £45,000+ within 2 to 3 years.
5. Data analyst bootcamp
12 to 24 weeks intensive (£4,000 to £10,000). Portfolio output expected. Entry roles £28,000 to £40,000 with strong progression. Skills Bootcamps cover some courses for eligible learners.
6. Web developer bootcamp
12 to 24 weeks intensive (£6,000 to £12,000) or self-taught in similar time. Entry-level roles £25,000 to £40,000 outside London, £30,000 to £50,000 in London.
7. UX or UI designer
4 to 9 months structured course plus portfolio building. Entry-level roles £28,000 to £40,000. Strong design background helps; not essential.
8. PRINCE2 or PMP (project management)
4 to 12 weeks (£500 to £1,500). Best for career changers with operational experience to leverage. Entry-level PM roles £30,000 to £45,000.
9. SIA security qualifications
SIA Door Supervisor or Close Protection licensing. Door supervisor 6 days, £200 to £400, starts at £22,000 to £30,000. Close protection 19+ days, £1,500 to £3,000, starts £30,000 to £50,000.
10. Skilled trade (accelerated adult routes)
Accelerated adult routes for electricians, plumbers and gas engineers can reach working-tradesperson level inside 6 to 18 months. Cost £5,000 to £15,000. Starting income £30,000 to £45,000 employed, £45,000+ self-employed once established.
How to choose between them
Three filters narrow the list quickly. Money: what can you afford to invest, and what is the realistic earnings uplift? Time and energy: which of these can you sustain for six months on top of (or instead of) current commitments? Genuine interest: which would survive the dull weeks in the middle of the course?
The wrong reason to pick a six-month course is “it’s short”. The right reason is “this is where I want to be working in twelve months”.

Frequently asked questions
- What career can I train for in 6 months in the UK?
- Several. HGV driving (8 to 14 weeks), accounting AAT Level 2 (3 to 6 months), digital marketing certifications (3 to 6 months), data analyst bootcamps (12 to 24 weeks), healthcare assistant roles (3 to 6 months), and most trade-skill accelerated routes for adults with existing transferable abilities. Pay ranges from £22,000 to £45,000+ depending on the route.
- Is six months enough time to change careers?
- For specific routes, yes. The qualification or skill base can be built in six months; building a portfolio, network and interview track record takes a few months more. A realistic timeline is six months of focused training, three months of portfolio and applications, then the first role. Total nine months from start to first day in the new field.
- Do six-month courses lead to real jobs?
- When the course produces a recognised qualification or a credible portfolio, yes. Avoid courses that promise a career change but produce only a generic completion certificate. The strongest six-month outcomes come from routes that integrate work placements or have established employer pipelines.
- How much do six-month courses cost?
- Wide range. Self-funded digital courses £150 to £3,000. Accredited qualifications (AAT, City & Guilds) £600 to £2,500. Intensive bootcamps £4,000 to £12,000. HGV training £2,500 to £4,500. Some routes are funded through Skills Bootcamps, employer sponsorship or NHS-funded programmes.
